Sox

Sox is Rachel’s only surviving pup. Read more about his mommy Rachel HERE. At birth she chewed off his penis probably thinking it was the umbilical cord. He was able to urinate in the beginning but as he grew some swelling set in and he was not able to urinate without our help. (his foster mom had to gently massage his belly (bladder area) to express urine. This had to be done every two hours.

His foster Mom writes:

We have had Rachel vetted and she is on the hotline for the vet..... He is expecting problems.....

Jan 4, 2007 .... Rachel is starting labor...green discharge and having much difficulty.. We rush her down to the vet's and the outcome does not look good. He gave her 3 injections of cal sorb. If we do a C section on her we will most definitely lose Rachel, if we let her have the pups naturally, we still have a chance of losing her and also the pups...

My first thoughts are that I rescued Rachel and she is my first priority.... We go home....and open the crate to find Rachel & a little white pup whom of course is named Freckles!

Second puppy was stillborn.. and we have a 3rd now..

a little black boy we have named Sox....

Within days Freckles died but not without a fight to save her... The vet seems to think she had internal problems. Sox is now our only pup and it seems he also has problems... BIG problems... During birthing Rachel seems to have bitten his penis off. Poor little Soxie is going to be in for a hard road ...We are having to help him urinate until he is older & stronger to undergo an operation to redo the damage that has been done to him. Rachel was too old and had no idea of what she was doing...This should not have happened to her and now poor Sox has to go thru so much in his first few weeks here.

Sox is doing well. Nice little fat puppy!! He is going to be the lone survivor .. I am so relieved to see she is going to be fine with this pup... He is now 8 days old. Courtney supplements him with a bottle or syringe. I don't think at this point he needs it.. Sometimes looks like he's gonna burst ;)

Jan 23,

Sox is doing so well and the vet is hoping we can do his operation in just a few weeks.

He loves to be held and loves his little belly rubbed. He falls asleep while you rub his belly..

Rachel is a great mom to Sox.... When she is able to be up for adoption she will make a great family dog. She loves people of all ages and just loves rapping her front legs around your waist and hugging... Rachel's paperwork from the shelter says that she was raised with children & cats.

Reason for surrender to the shelter was simply "not enough time for her"

... Been a tough nite.. Sox took a turn for the worse. He saw the vet this evening and Dr. Braunstein had to draw his urine out through a needle. His little pee pee is completely swollen and his urine now is with blood. The Doc doesn't think he will make it through the weekend ...Gave us the option on euthanizing him. I could not do it or call you to make the call...Maybe I'm wrong in this but, I gotta give it all ... We just drained him and I will drain him again around 12:00.. Rachel seems to have pushed him aside. But when we took him from her to drain him she went nuts, so when I go back down at midnight, if I see she is sleeping in another corner than him I will bring him to the house with me. We are nursing him and his appetite is great...Temp at vet's was 102... Dr. Braunstein says that if he makes it thru the weekend, he will try surgery

Monday.. He is not very optimistic on if he can even survive the surgery.... Busting my chops as to whether I should not have let him go tonite... but... again I just gotta do all .. my husband, daughter’s and Becky have been soooo helpful. Sox would not have made it this far without their help.

Well everyone, He is now in the vet's care... Tough morning... I was not allowed to give him breakfast this morning. He didn't understand, kept suckling on our faces, fingers, looking for his bottle... Dr. Braunstein is doing his surgery first... Will let everyone know as soon as I get a call..

He's doing so good! The uretherostomy surgery was a success. He has a catheter in 'till the opening heals. He's wagging his tail, It's so funny! He squats and pees and just looks up at you like as if to say... "Look" ... He’s with us constantly and is in the grooming room with us during the day. He comes home at nite and sleeps in his pet taxi with one of the girls. He is now sleeping thru the nite without a nite feeding and that dreadful empty of the bladder that we had to do to him. That was terrible! He cried & screamed when we had to relieve him... :( He is eating , drinking and peeing on his own now , No more bottle feedings, no more emptying his bladder.. All in All .. he's is quite the little survivor!!
