Skunk Story, Part 2

President's Message

Due to popular demand, I have finally pulled myself together and started this year’s first newsletter. SADSAC has been SO busy, especially last summer neutering dogs and cats, rescuing ferrets and bunnies (yes, that’s right, bunnies), treating a dog for heartworms, trapping cats in feral colonies, etc. Things are quiet on the home front, that is, the skunk population seems to be relatively under control.

This year we are currently working on one colony in Dale City and have been asked to help another in Woodbridge. We will be working with Animal Allies to help TNR this colony as soon as possible. They have caught a few litters of kittens and will continue to tame, neuter and adopt them.

Sherry Meier, President SADSAC

CFC United Way and Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign

SADSAC’s United Way CFC designation number is 7768 if you would like to make a payroll deduction contribution. Also, we are happy to accept monetary donations which are tax deductible. You can drop them by the clinic at Independent Hill or put them in the mail to SADSAC, P.O. Box 972, Dumfries, VA 22026. We’ll do our very best to help all those we can. We can’t do it without you.

We have also been added to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign. Our designation number with CVC is 3551.

Events/Fundraisers:

We have signed up with Food Lion's Shop and Share program! Each time you shop at Food Lion and use your MVP card, a portion of your total grocery purchase will be donated to the school, church or other local not-for-profit organization you have selected. Go to the Food Lion site at http://www.foodlion.com/ and click on In the Community, then Lion Shop and Share to select Save a Dog Save a Cat as the organization you wish to receive this donation. Thank you!

We are still microchipping at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic. Please call (703) 791-2083 to make an appointment.

Save Those Purina Labels!

Check your dog and cat food bags for weight circles from Purina Proplan and CNM Rx diets for donation to SADSAC. You can drop them off at the clinic any time. Just tell the receptionist to give them to Sherry. We thank you in advance.

Skunk Story, Part 2

I think I owe you part two of the skunk story. So here goes. If I had done this sooner my memory would have made for a better story, but I’ll make do.

Several nights later, I made my way down to the barn for a night check somewhere around 10 PM. This is when I walk into the cold, dark barn about 12 feet to get to the nearest light switch. (Gotta do something about that…) I go into the feed room and get the grain to feed the horse in stall #6.

As I open the feed door I suddenly become aware that something has moved under my foot. Ooops, must’ve stepped on something… eeek!!! Yep, you guessed it–a skunk’s tail. Well, luckily for me only his tail was sticking out from under the wall and he seemed to be furiously trying to back out of the stall. Uh oh, he must be after ME!

So I bolt backwards out of the barn, grain flying, and here comes the little black one, with rat in mouth, trotting toward me, little Pepe le Pue. Remember him? Still unsure why he is running TOWARD me, and not really caring why, I begin to realize that this little creature is headed toward its home. Its home is under my feed room. Hmmm. Now this creates a whole new problem, but at least I know he’s not after ME!

As usual, I hoof it up to the house, “Mark, Mark, MARK! There’s a skunk in the barn and I stepped on its tail and it ran toward me and it lives under the feed room!” I rant breathlessly, hoping he has some wisp of wisdom. Now we’re in big trouble, I think. There are now at least two skunks living under my feed room. Now what?

So, the trapping began. But alas, that is part three of the story. Stay tuned until next time…

Special Thanks

As always, a few special thank yous are in order:

Jessie Weinhold for being a tireless transporter for bunnies and great help to SADSAC evaluating rescues
Tama& Candy Breeden for finding room for the endless stream of bunnies and the occasional kitty foster
Kari Watt for offering help transporting and moral support
Cindy Kreiman for continuing to do what you do–you are my hero
Jo Kinnaly our webmistress
Sandy & Jackie Parish my cohorts and partners in crime
Last, but not least, my husband Mark, who thinks I am crazy, but helps anyway.

To all of you who continue to lend financial support–I cannot name all of you, but the Lee family, the Purnell family, the Wright family, thank you for thinking of SADSAC with the passing of Buford, Pam Cosner, Gail Pfeiffer, Mrs. Craig for putting that money in the donation jar, the Cebulas, and everyone else who writes checks and leaves money and tries to help us in any way you can.
