Feral Cat Update

Well, another year down and a new one has begun. It seems the older I get, the faster it goes. Spring is definitely in the air, even though it’s only the beginning of February as I write this. The ferals have begun to breed and thanks to our loyal followers I am able to renew my trapping efforts. Currently I am going through about 30 pounds of cat food a week, just for the ferals. I just can’t say how grateful I am every time I check the post office box. Your donations will be put to good use, as I continue trapping my outrageous feral kitty population. As always, Rho, my favorite feral, is acting as babysitter for my newest charge, Angel. Angel is a lynx point Siamese mix. She is not a feral, but I was compelled to take her in a few short weeks ago. She took Bogie’s place as he found a great home with a friend of a friend. Congratulations to Bogie and his new family!

In my latest trapping effort, not only did I get three females out of three, but one of them was Junior. Junior is short for Rho Junior, for obvious reasons. This is one of the friendliest, sweetest, feral kitties I have ever caught. She leaps into my arms and immediately starts purring like mad and rolling around to make the most of my attentions. Surely, I say to myself, there has got to be someone for this kitty. But, adoptions are slow, and the kitties just keep pouring in. I have reached my limit, and then some, and am about to adopt a little boy - the human kind - myself. It is extremely sad to hear all the phone calls and get all the e-mails, day in and day out, from people desperately seeking a place to give up their animals.

Still, Sandy, Jackie and I continue doing the best we can with our limited resources. Recently, we were able to spay two female dogs, “fix” numerous cats, and hook up a few people with new pets along the way. Our horse show fundraiser did fairly well, we made about $200-$250. And we had a huge donation from some friends of SADSAC who have two of the biggest hearts in the world! We cannot thank you enough for this incredible donation. Not only did you make my day, but I think I walked around the clinic grinning from ear to ear for a few days afterward. Yee-ha! We could never do it without all of you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, kisses, purrs and headbutts to all of you for supporting our animal friendly efforts! Have a great Spring!

Sherry Meier, President SADSAC

CFC United Way

There has been a tremendous response to our request for help via the CFC. We thank all of you who have designated us as your charity! For those of you who would like to assist us this way, our CFC number is 7768. These funds will help us to spay, neuter, and save as many lives as possible in the future.

Events/Fundraisers:

We will be running a concession stand at up-coming horse shows at Cedar Run Horse Center on Spriggs Rd. Dates will be available soon on our new calendar, and we've also included directions for your convenience. Admission to the shows is free.

Unfortunately, our stash of yard sale items has been vandalized and some things were stolen. We respectfully request that you hang on to any yard sale items you may have until we decide what to do next.

We could still use any craft items for the next craft show. We're not sure of the exact date, so please check back or watch for the information on our calendar.

We are still microchipping at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic. Please call (703) 791-2083 to make an appointment.

Adoption Information

Due to increasing time constraints, our adoption days will be held twice a month, generally on the 2nd and 4th Saturday, from 11AM to 2PM at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic, 13444 Dumfries Road (Woodbine Shopping Center on Route 234), Manassas, VA. However, major holidays may interfere with this schedule. For your convenience, we now have a calendar, and we'll post dates regularly there. If you need more information, call Sherry at (703) 221-0324.

Featured Pet--Sweetie

Hi, my name is Sweetie, and I was abandoned by my mom and dad when I was about a year old. One day, they just moved away and left my brother and me behind. I was very scared, and very hungry.

Then, this nice lady started leaving food out for me. She caught my brother and that made me even more wary. One day, while I was trying to eat some food on her porch, she came outside. I was so scared that I ran and I ran. I didn't know that running across the street was a mistake, and I was hit. I didn't know what hit me, all I knew was incredible pain.

Down in the ditch and into a creek bed I went, before the humans finally caught up to me. They picked me up and took me straight to the vet, where I heard them say I had a broken pelvis and that I would need surgery costing well over a thousand dollars! I hurt so bad that I just didn't care anymore. The doctors gave me pain medication and made me comfortable for the night to see if there were any other complications. Luckily, it turned out that there really weren't any, and the doctor thought I could do without the operation altogether! Another nice lady took me home, but I just hurt too badly to eat, even on pain medication. She tried everything, and I finally agreed to baby food. This was awfully expensive, so I hear, so she then switched me to canned food.

Well, that's when my addiction began! This was almost two years ago, and I am still addicted today. I will eat dry food, but I live for the canned stuff. Currently I reside with still another nice lady, Jackie, who is my foster mom, and a few other kitties. I would like to have a forever home for myself, maybe with other animals. If you can provide the canned food, I will provide the love. Please contact the nice ladies at SADSAC at (703) 221-0324 if you would like more information on adopting me. Thank you!

Save Those Purina Labels!

Check your dog and cat food bags for weight circles from Purina Proplan and CNM Rx diets for donation to SADSAC. You can drop them off at the clinic any time. Just tell the receptionist to give them to Sherry. We thank you in advance.
