President's Message

Hello again, it’s time for another update. As usual, many things have been going on, and I will try to mention a few. We have come upon a wayward black Chow Chow who is quite nice to be around and seems to do well with other dogs, cats and even young children. His name is Ethan Bear and he can be seen at the Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic with enough notice to have the foster mom bring him in. We just know there has got to be a good home out there for him somewhere--we knew what would happen if he went to the pound.

We are currently working on our usual feral cat colonies plus a few more and are saturated with kitties. Our largest colony seems to be doing well, and I daresay there just don’t seem to be so many unneutered ones running around. Wouldn’t that be something? Whatever would I do with my spare time? There has been only one casualty in the colony (that I know of) in the last few months, and I was quick to give my work number to the lady who called animal control to have the injured kitty picked up.

I guess the big story is the sheer number of cats we currently have available for adoption. We have decided to branch out and have one adoption day per month at Petco in Manassas, and hope to be able to do the same at the new Petco stores currently under construction in Stafford and Dale City. We think this will be of great benefit, as there is much more traffic and more people come with the intent of finding a new pet. We will keep you posted.

Sherry Meier, President SADSAC

CFC United Way

There has been a tremendous response to our request for help via the CFC. We thank all of you who have designated us as your charity! For those of you who would like to choose us, our CFC Number is 7768. These funds will help enable us to spay, neuter and save as many lives as possible in the future.

Events/Fundraisers:

We have been running a concession stand at horse shows this year at Cedar Run Horse Center on Spriggs Rd. The next show is Dec. 8. Other dates are available on our calendar, and we've also included directions for your convenience. Admission to the shows is free.

We are still microchipping at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic. Please call (703) 791-2083 to make an appointment.

Sterile Feral Cat Walk 2001

The first annual Sterile Feral Cat Walk, organized by Alley Cat Allies, was held Oct. 13 at Belle Haven Park in Alexandria. It was a beautiful morning for a walk and the turnout was great, with rescue groups from as far away as Orange County participating. We raised over $1,200 for SADSAC and are thrilled to have been able to make a difference for feral cats all over the area! Thanks to everyone who walked or sponsored walkers on our behalf.

Adoption Information

Our schedule for pet adoptions has changed. Adoption days are generally held twice a month, the 2nd Saturday, from 11AM to 2PM at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic, 13444 Dumfries Road (Woodbine Shopping Center on Route 234), Manassas, VA, and the 3rd or 4th Sunday at Petco, 10800 Promenade Lane. Major holidays may interfere with this schedule, so for your convenience, we have a calendar where we regularly post dates. If you need more information, call Sherry at (703) 221-0324.

Featured Pets--Belle, Twinkle, Kee Kitty, Cisco and Trephina

Belle Belle has come back to us, a victim of divorce. This is the most friendly, cutest, snuggliest little kitty you’d ever want to meet, except that she doesn’t tolerate other animals well. She could really use a home where someone has the time to cuddle.

Kee KittyKee Kitty and Twinkle are in particular need of a special home because they are possible rhino carriers. This means they may harbor the rhino virus which is one of the viruses included in the feline distemper vaccination at most animal hospitals. Any vaccinated cat is safe from the disease, but those not current on vaccinations or with a weakened immune system would be subject. The rhino virus is an upper respiratory infection that can be mild or severe with symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, runny eyes, etc.

TwinkleThey are each on a medication called L-Lysine to help stop the shedding of the virus. Luckily for me, all of mine are vaccinated and no one else gets this virus. If you recall, Twinkle is a visually impaired kitty that somehow survived out there in a feral colony with over one hundred other cats and busy streets all around. She truly deserves to be safe.

CiscoCisco is our FIV positive kitty. He is truly a wonderful cat--very gentle and laid back. He loves to be petted and will give you head butts while you are holding him. At this point, he is doing great and could live for a very long time.

TrephinaTrephina is a petite young lady with tortoise shell markings. She has personality plus! She is very curious about most anything and makes a wonderful alarm clock. She loves to give kisses to ensure that you are up on time. Scratching boards are a favorite with her. From time to time the water in her dish just isn't good enough--she sometimes prefers water straight from the faucet. Go figure! She's quite a character and very special.

Save Those Purina Labels!

Check your dog and cat food bags for weight circles from Purina Proplan and CNM Rx diets for donation to SADSAC. You can drop them off at the clinic any time. Just tell the receptionist to give them to Sherry. We thank you in advance.
