Feral Cat UpdateThanks to you our ferals have a new shelter, a dogloo donated by the Griffiths, and enough cat food for at least a whole month, donated by Andrew and Joanna Valente who are new to SADSAC. While we haven't had the funds to spay or neuter many since our last newsletter, we have been able to place an unusual feral named Polly. She is "visually challenged" having been one of the unfortunate ones to have been born with only one viable eye. I never dreamed that I would find someone kind enough to take this kitty in. She is quite a little pistol, and her new mommy reports that she still has to sneak up on her to pet her or pick her up sometimes. Once she's in her arms, Polly just loves the attention. What a great success story--she is adjusting to indoor life and loves to sleep in her new parents' bed, and even attacks their feet! On another note, since I have recently placed one of my rescues, I am attempting to take in one of the ferals for "domesticating." His name is Rho, as in the Greek alphabet, which is how we identified these kitties for spaying and neutering. (We have since moved on to the English alphabet and are somewhere near "N.") Rho is a black domestic long hair who disliked me from the very beginning. Always fearful, he would run and hiss at me whenever our paths crossed. I have watched him make the dangerous trek across the street many times, and I worry that one day he won't make it. I have worked long and hard trying desperately to gain his trust, and he has become my favorite. When I first trapped him, he was heavily matted, had ear mites and fleas, and was very aggressive. He was the only one that tried to strike at me when I made any attempts to clean his litter box or bring him food in his crate during his recovery period. I think it was safe to say he hated me. Well, all that has changed. He greets me every night when I come to feed, running right up to my car and chatting madly until I get to him. He allows me to pet him gently, when he's hungry, and even let me work some mats out of his tail! This is one of the greatest rewards I will ever receive. To earn the love and trust of a feral cat is an honor, and one that I truly appreciate. Sherry Meier, President SADSAC CFC United WayIt's that time of year--please consider us when you decide which charity to designate your United Way contributions to. Our CFC number is 7768. We appreciate your contributions and assure you that your money will not go to waste! Events/Fundraisers:Our yard sale, held Oct. 14, 2000 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Woodbridge, VA, was an enormous success! We made over $350 from the yard sale and more than $55 from the accompanying bake sale, all of which will be used for the animals we're committed to helping. Thanks to everyone who donated items for sale and all those who came! We participated in a craft show Saturday, Nov. 4th from 9AM to 3PM at Bethel United Methodist Church, and raised $245! Thank you, crafters, for your donated items, those who made cash donations, and everyone who attended! We will be running a concession stand at up-coming horse shows at Cedar Run Horse Center on Spriggs Rd. beginning Feb. 17, 2001. Additional dates will be available soon on our new calendar. We are still microchipping at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic. Please call (703) 791-2083 to make an appointment. Adoption InformationDue to increasing time constraints, our adoption days will be held twice a month, generally on the 2nd and 4th Saturday, from 11AM to 2PM at Independent Hill Veterinary Clinic, 13444 Dumfries Road (Woodbine Shopping Center on Route 234), Manassas, VA. However, major holidays may interfere with this schedule. For your convenience, we now have a calendar, and we'll post dates regularly there. If you need more information, call Sherry at (703) 221-0324. Save Those Purina Labels!Check your dog and cat food bags for weight circles from Purina Proplan and CNM Rx diets for donation to SADSAC. You can drop them off at the clinic any time. Just tell the receptionist to give them to Sherry. We thank you in advance. Heinz Pet Product SymbolsWe hope soon to begin participating in the Homeless Homer Program sponsored by Heinz Pet Products. Please watch for Homeless Homer or Morris the Cat symbols on these products:
After you've clipped the symbols, sort them into like "denominations", and when you have ten of the same symbol, staple them together--it's that simple! Like the Purina weight circles, these may be dropped off at the clinic for Sherry. Thank you! In Loving MemoryPlease visit our new In Memoriam page. |
