Animals belonging to Animal Control: $15.00 + the cost of a spay/neuter
Animals belonging to the Humane Society: $85.00

If the animal you are adopting from Animal Control has been spayed/neutered and you're asked to pay, that means the surgery was paid for by the Humane Society prior to adoption, so you are simply reimbursing PCHS.

Yes, we do adopt out to people living in other counties in Virginia and we may adopt out to people living in nearby states (NC, TN, MD, etc.). However, you are responsible for coming to the shelter to pick up the animal since we do not have the means to transport an animal to you. Please contact us so we can reply with specific details about the animal.

Depending upon the interest in the specific pet, it can take 2 - 5 days.

Sometimes numerous applications are received for one animal. The personality and needs of the pet are matched with the most appropriate home environment.
You may apply for another pet, or ask us to change the name of the pet on your application for another one.

To say an animal is going to "rescue" means that it has been accepted into an organization that works hard to save animals from euthanasia and place them in carefully screened homes. Many of these groups focus on specific breeds (Siamese cats, German Shepherd dogs), specific species (dogs, cats, birds), and even elderly pets who probably wouldn't find homes otherwise.
Animals selected for rescue will live great lives in foster homes, often receiving training and/or medical treatment, until the perfect forever home is found.

PCHS is proud to be a part of the PetSmart Charities' Rescue Waggin' program. Special transport vehicles travel around the country picking up adoptable dogs and puppies from high volume shelters like ours, and take them to areas with a high demand for these pets (the high demand comes from successful spay/neuter programs in these areas!). This program also offers funding for spay/neuter and other benefits.

It is our mission and reason for existance to help animals in need. Often, animals are stressed due to being seperated from their original home. We want a new union of the pet and family to be a lasting success and the more details about the applicant, the greater chance of a perfect match. Our goal is to place animals in loving "forever" homes.
