Sweet William's Plea

Sweet William patiently awaits a home of his own

When "Sweet William" was brought to Noah's Bark to be adopted, I recoiled when I saw him. My first reaction was "Oh for God's sake, put him out of his misery."

Sweet William has one eye, his skin barely clung to the protruding bones, his body was covered with cigarette burns, and scars. He is a Pit Bull - what possible hope could this dog have of being rehabilitated and adopted?

Sweet William's sad state had been caused by his former owner.

My morbid thoughts were interrupted as Sweet William leaned his frail 27 pound body against my leg. I looked down at the twinkling eye - he was smiling.

As I bent down his gentle tongue gave my face a thorough bath. Then he sat down on my lap. Another volunteer stopped to pat his head - he rolled over on his back - How would he know what a tummy rub was? What a beautiful face we thought - as he lay on my lap asleep.

That was almost two years ago. Today, Sweet William weighs almost 100 pounds. The burn(s) have healed. A few old scars and his one eye are the only signs of the torture he endured.

The twinkling in his eye makes us wonder what this 3 year old survivor knows about life that we don't. Is he just so grateful to be alive that the day to day 3'x3' cage confinement doesn't leave him depressed or stir crazy?

Does he understand that he is so dearly loved by his rescue people and we're trying desperately to find him a loving home for life?

Does he wait patiently for the loving family to adopt him knowing he can give them all his love and loyalty? After all he's been through. Does he still trust mankind?

Yes - he seems to know all this. There are so many lessons we've learned from this kind and gentle giant. Patience. . .as each Saturday we move him from the boarding facility to yet another cage - where he sits, tail wagging at the people passing by. "Maybe this Saturday I'll be adopted" he seems to be saying.

He makes us laugh at our own silly problems as he washes our faces with his big tongue.
