K-9 Stray Rescue League is a state and federally licensed non-profit group formed in 1990 primarily to save dogs on the euthanasia list at the Oakland County Animal Shelter. We now check out additional county shelters on a daily basis as well. Because we always find more deserving dogs at the shelters than we can house, we limit the number of ‘give-ups’ that we take. We’ll usually take ‘give-ups’ only when we know it’s a dog we can place right away (one that won’t deprive a doomed ‘pound puppy’ a place at our temporary kennel facility) or under ‘extreme’ circumstances when all other avenues to find a place for an adoptable ‘give-up’ have been exhausted.

Most of the dogs at county and local shelters are there through no fault of their own. All most of them need is a 'loving', 'understanding', and 'responsible' new home. That's where 'you' (hopefully) come into the picture. We strongly encourage you to give these 'discards' a 'New Leash on Life' by adopting from a local or county shelter, a humane society, or an organization like ours.

K-9 Stray Rescue makes sure that all of its’ dogs are spayed or neutered and actively encourages everyone to spay/neuter their pets. We don’t want anyone to add to the over-population problem that currently puts so many innocent animals on ‘death row’ (at least 13 million in the USA every year). We bring our rescued dogs up-to-date on all medical needs and spay/neuter them prior to adoption.

Some of the expenses incurred while taking care of these dogs are offset by the adoption fee, however many times the vet bills and boarding fees far exceed the adoption fees. We are also constantly striving to improve out kennel facility with things like totally enclosed runs with heat and lighting for the cold winter months. We rely on the donations of caring people like you to continue our services, and it is tax deductible!

Do you know what it costs K9 to rescue a dog & place it up for adoption?

Spay $90
Neuter $75
Heartworm Test $15
7/1 Distemper Shot $24
Rabies Shot $18
Shelter fees average $39 per dog
Monthly heartworm preventative $4 per dog

There are many other fees that may arise, for example;
If a dog is heartworm positive - we treat them $150-$300.

If there is no room at the K9 Inn we pay $$ per day
to board the dogs until we have room.

And there are many instances when the dogs come to us
sick from the shelter and we incur more vet bills.
