We
Can't Do It Alone!
Gastineau Humane Society's
educational efforts, and implementation of our spay/neuter
program, have helped to improve care and control of
pets by owners, resulting in fewer incoming animals over
the
years, and fewer euthanasia's. Our success is gratifying,
but creates a "catch 22" situation. Animal control
is handled by GHS on contract for the City and Borough
of
Juneau and is funded by CBJ; but our humane services
are supported by donations, adoption, boarding, groom
room rental and sale of a small assortment of retail
items. As we become more efficient and effective in
reducing the number of unwanted animals, our income
decreases
due to fewer impound and adoption fees. In order to
maintain and improve our services we must find ways
to offset
that loss.
This is particularly
important due to steadily increasing numbers of animals
being sent to GHS from outlying communities. In 1991
there were only 38. In 1998 that number increased to
141 animals. It is critical that we expand our programs
and services to help these communities control their
growing problem, which impacts our already limited resources.
