Susie & Pete

Golden Retriever

I have been in dogs for approximately 33 years.  I started with a Cocker Spaniel that I put an obedience title on, which took me YEARS longer than it should have...so I switched to Goldens!  I got my first Golden from Pekay Kennels, and have had 3 other Goldens from the same kennel since then.  I have put several obedience titles on dogs, but do not show dogs now.  I got Pete when he was 8 weeks old.  He is 6 years old now.  His registered name is Pekay's Pete Rose.

I have always been involved with dogs in some capacity.  I am currently a member of the Douglasville Kennel Club, the Atlanta Golden Retriever Club and the Golden Retriever Rescue Group in Atlanta.  I have always liked to work with the elderly, so I knew when I retired I wanted to do nursing homes visits with one of my dogs.

I took my other Golden, Dixie, to the first training class, thinking I would train her for therapy work.  She had NO interest in learning any obedience commands.  She is pretty much a couch potato, but I thought Pete was too rambunctious to visit the elderly.  But, he performed beautifully when I started training him with food.  He has been such a joy to work with, and he gets so excited when I get his collar and his leash and tell him we are going "visiting".  I have never owned a dog like him before.  He has such personality and is the sweetest, most well behaved dog you could ever ask for.  Everybody who comes in contact with Pete loves him.

I live in Douglasville and have 2 children.  We also have our other golden named Dixie, who is 9 years old, and a Yorkie named Rainey who is 2 years old.  I retired from the State of Georgia after 34 years.  We visit Douglasville Rehab every Thurs.  We also visit Lithia Springs High School and Sweetwater Assisted Living.

*We will be adding some pictures of Pete soon!
