Where do they come from?
We ARE NOT affiliated with any other Humane Organizations in and around Concord & Cabarrus County in regards to adoptions (though we support most rescue groups - but NOT pet stores - who get their animals from puppy and kitten mills).
We ARE affiliated with the Cabarrus County Animal Control Facility. (Please note: The County does have different hours.)
Once a week animals are selected through those offered to us by Animal Control. All of the selected animals are given a health check by a licensed Veterinarian before being put up for adoption. Dogs are tested for heartworm and parvo. Cats are tested for feline leukemia and AIDS. All animals receive vaccinations and are treated for parasites (if any). They also receive medication to prevent fleas and ticks. Dogs are started on heartworm preventive medication. Any sick animals are treated and made well and healthy before being released for adoption (or conditions are noted on their health record).
WE TRY VERY HARD TO ENSURE THAT ANY ANIMAL WE ADOPT IS HEALTHY. THAT'S WHY OUR ANIMALS ARE GIVEN HEALTH CHECKS AND THEIR SHOTS BEFORE BEING OFFERED FOR ADOPTION.
Individuals may have animals for adoption that are as cute and cuddly as any we offer. However, they more than likely cannot verify these animals have been checked or vetted in any way to assure it is free of disease or parasites.
UNWANTED ANIMALS - Please note that unfortunately our Humane Society is not able to take in unwanted, unvaccinated animals directly from the public. We work directly with animal control and make our selections of rescued animals from those surrendered to them or found as strays. The animals you see offered are only a fraction of the animals that come into animal control's possession. It's a harsh fact that thousands of animals are euthanized at this facility alone each year. We do what we can, but our hearts break when the volunteers who make the selections weekly have to turn their backs on so many knowing that by the following week those not selected will have lost their chance at rescue and an entirely new group of faces will greet them and the cycle continues. While we are fortunate that Cabarrus Animal Control allows us a room of cat cages and 8 dog runs, we are no different than any other volunteer organization - our space is limited and we cannot save every animal. You, the public, need to help us in spreading the word on the importance of spaying and neutering. The blame cannot be passed on if an owner has not been responsible in this action. Please DO NOT call our hotline regarding unwanted or unvaccinated animals. The animals must be turned over to animal control.
